New Scientist cover and spot illustrations

' drinkers learn to like the taste of alcohol because they associate it with pleasure, so they could gradually re-educate their palates to appreciate substitutes too.'

'The big problem with alcohol is that it kills people. And while there's an obvious way to stop this happening - drink less or not at all - for some reason, humans find this advice nigh on impossible to follow.'

For this project we had to create a cover and two black and white spot illustrations for New Scientist. I found a great article in one magazine called 'Taking the Demons out of drink' looking at whether you can replace alcohol with a pill or whether you can solve hang overs with a pill.

Text Me Up

This project was to illustrate texts from Tracey Moberly's new book 'Text Me Up'. The book is a collection of text messages she has kept since 1999! I picked out three out the 100,000 she has! Here's a link to the book if you are interested- http://www.sanderswood.com/text-me-up!/

'Kill kill kill'

'Where's my sugar puffs'

'KY jelly £3.00 Nicole love doll £84.95 Penis enlarger £39.95. Porno Paul'

The images will be displayed in The Museum of Club Culture on Wednesday 23rd when Tracey Moberly is also doing a talk about her book, so get yourself down to that! There will be lots of other illustrators displaying their interpretations of the texts too! http://www.facebook.com/groups/378470125091/

Bruce Mau Quotes

Take Field Trips
- The bandwidth of the world is greater than that of your TV set, or the Internet, or even a totally immersive, interactive, dynamically rendered. object-oriented, real-time graphic-simulated computer environment.

Imitate - Don't be shy about it. Try to get as close as you can. You'll never get all the way, and the separation might be truly remarkable.

Go Deep
- The deeper you go, the more likely you will discover something of value.

Drift
- Allow yourself to wander aimlessly. Explore adjacencies. Lack judgement. Postpone criticism.

Slow Down
- Desynchronize with typical time frames and surprising opportunities may present themselves.

Stay up late - Strange things happen when you've gone too far, been up too long, worked too hard, and you're separated from the rest of the world.

Return of the Editorial Work

'The age of reason' is an article by Julie Burchill who comments on the change of progress between boys and girls at school, that girls are over taking boys educationally and boys are taking a back seat. She also comments on the differences between men and women and how women are progressing in the work place and men seem to be the ones buying the aprons now.

'Puss in Books' is an article that discusses the origin of the Cheshire cat in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. I have played around here by trying to combine all the different theories- A Cheshire pub-sign painter whose lions looked more like cheerful moggies. Cheshire cheese makers used to mould one end of the cheese into the shape of a grinning cat. And Cheshire was a county Palatine (under royal rule) which apparently cats find amusing.

'Seven ways to boost your brainpower' this article focuses on certain things studies have shown to boost your brain power - Strawberries, juggling, broccoli, iron, not skipping breakfast, exercising and a bit of what you fancy.

Old Uni Work

Found some pictures I took of my work in the first year of fine art! It's crazy when I look at what my work used to be like! It's change so much in the past 2 years, I forget how dark my work was. I still love the prints I did though they were so much fun! Glad I chose to go down the illustration route eventually.

The Rooster

The Rooster!
One of the Chinese Zodiacs, the Rooster years are 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005. People born in the Year of the Rooster are deep thinkers, capable, and talented. They like to be busy and are devoted beyond their capabilities and are deeply disappointed if they fail. People born in the Rooster Year are often a bit eccentric. Rooster can also be selfish and too outspoken, but he/she is always interesting and can be extremely brave.

As you can see I have tried to create a rather pompous eccentric looking Rooster to represent this zodiac sign and I feel it really works well for it. The set is coming along nicely.

The Great Bear

The Great Bear! August 22-Sept 21

'Pragmatic and methodical the bear is the one to call when a steady hand is needed. The Bear's practicality and level-headedness makes him/her an excellent business partner. The Bear is also gifted with an enormous heart, and a penchant for generosity. However, one might not know it as the Bear tends to be very modest, and a bit shy. Further, the Bear has a capacity for patience and temperance, which makes him/her excellent teachers and mentors. Left to his'her own devices the Bear can be sceptical, sloth, small-minded and reclusive.'

I've been checking out symbols and zodiacs that animals represent in different countries as part of my summer project, the Bear is part of Native American Animal symbolism. I've tried to create an illustration of the Bear here in my own style. The Native Americans consider Bears to be very similar to humans so I've made my Bear very humanistic.
If you want to see more on Native American symbols this is the website I looked at http://www.whats-your-sign.com/native-american-animal-symbols.html

Instant Camera!

Best buy ever is my Fuji film instant mini camera! These are some of the images I took on my Birthday night out awhile ago! Thought I'd share them with you! If you want a camera that takes instant pics i'd definitely recommend this one its really handy and not to big so you can take it any where with you!

Mr Blobby

It was my friend Rich's birthday the other day and I've kept saying for ages I'd do him a picture and I finally got round to it! Everyone used to love Mr Blobby...to an extent! It was fun to draw and I'm happy that Rich actually looks like Rich I was worried I'd mess it up! I thought I would share it with everyone because I love it, and for once my typography looks good too :D!

Russian Circus Doll

A piece i did the other day when I was out Urban Sketching, I'd been drawing buildings so long I escaped back into my imagination! I'll put some of the sketches I did up from through out the day but this was my favourite one that came to me right at the end as I drank my pint of cider in the sun :)! Its a kind of Russian circus doll or To-tum pole.
